On days when deadlines loom, your stress is high, people are counting on you, and you are struggling to keep up, you may feel like the last thing you have time for is a break. However, these are the very days when you would be doing everyone, including yourself, a favour by taking one!

Most workplaces in Canada provide at least one break during an 8-hour or longer shift. What you do during that time could have an impact on your health. To help remain healthy and productive at work, it’s important to take time to care for yourself. Work breaks may not only be beneficial to employees who may be experiencing depression, anxiety-related disorders, or excessive stress at work, but may improve the overall mental health of all employees.

Take Your Break is a resource that includes no to low-cost activities designed to encourage regular breaks, even during the busiest of workdays. The activities were developed by wellness professionals from across Canada. There are three categories of activities to choose from: calming, relaxation and energizing. Examples include tending to your wellness by planting something, exercising at your desk, completing a puzzle with your colleagues or setting aside time to walk in nature.

You can read about all of the activities online and download those that make sense for you or your team, or you can subscribe to the Take Your Break email program. Once a week, you will receive an email that explains an activity and how it may be beneficial.

You may be surprised at the positive results that can be achieved by investing just a few minutes in yourself each day!
