Being a Mindful Employee:

An Orientation to Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety outlines psychosocial factors that can impact the psychological health and safety of employees. Both employer and employees share the responsibility to protect psychological safety, support positive organizational culture, and a contribute to a respectful workplace.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada, along with Mindful Employer Canada developed Being a Mindful Employee: An Orientation to Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace . This free online modular learning system can be used individually or by an employer to ensure all employees are aware of their role in a psychologically healthy and safe workplace.

This program can be introduced during employee orientation, at a training session, or simply assigned through email every couple of years.

Being a Mindful Employee is intended to help employees better understand what they can do to protect the well-being of themselves and others in the workplace.

Description of the resource

Each of the 14 free, online units includes:

  • a description of a psychological factor and how it affects the workplace
  • a scenario to help participants think about the factor
  • a short quiz that tests knowledge and awareness
  • an optional video

Once all modules have been completed, there will be:

  • a final quiz
  • a certificate of completion

When employers sign up, they have the option of tracking which employees have successfully completed all the modules. This provides an ongoing learning management approach that can be revisited every couple of years in the same way other health and safety training is managed.
